The Bean in His Nose: A Lesson in Calm Parenting<\/h2>\r\n

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon. I had carved out a little “mummy time” to catch up on work before the week began. Laptop open, thoughts focused\u2014I was in my zone.<\/p>\r\n

Then came a tiny voice. \u201cMy nose,\u201d said my two-year-old.<\/p>\r\n

He had left his sister in the kitchen to come find me in the study. Still distracted, I smiled quickly and said, \u201cYes, that\u2019s your nose. What other body parts do you know, darling?\u201d<\/p>\r\n

But he didn\u2019t smile back. I could almost see the gears turning in his little head: She\u2019s not getting it.<\/em><\/p>\r\n

He turned around and went to find his dad in the living room. But Dad was on a phone call, barely noticing the pint-sized interruption. So my determined toddler circled back to me.<\/p>\r\n

This time, he took my hand and pressed it to his face. That got my attention. I shut my laptop and gave him my full focus.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cShow Mummy your ears… your eyebrows\u2026\u201d I coaxed.<\/p>\r\n

He cut me off, more urgent now. \u201cMummy, nose!\u201d he said, this time with more emotion. Then he jammed his pinkie finger up his nostril.<\/p>\r\n

Alarm bells went off.<\/p>\r\n

I gently tilted his head and looked. He had just recovered from a cold, so I expected the usual congestion. But instead of inflamed pink flesh, I saw a bright red\u2014almost orange\u2014bulge deep in his nose.<\/p>\r\n

That was not mucus.<\/p>\r\n

Panic rising, I scooped him up and headed to the living room, where the lighting was better. I motioned to my husband. \u201cI think there\u2019s something stuck up his nose.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

He peered in. \u201cLooks like… a tomato?\u201d<\/p>\r\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt\u2019s too dark.\u201d Then it hit me.<\/p>\r\n

Beans.<\/p>\r\n

My daughter had been picking a bowl of beans while babysitting him. \u201cOh my goodness! He\u2019s shoved a bean up his nose!\u201d<\/p>\r\n

I started frantically looking for the car keys. We had to go to the ER.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cAre you sure you can\u2019t get it out with tweezers?\u201d my husband asked.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cTweezers?! What if I push it further up? What if I puncture something? You do it! Wait\u2014Google it!\u201d<\/p>\r\n

By now, my three teenage girls had gathered, each one pointing fingers at the other for not watching him closely enough. It was chaos.<\/p>\r\n

I sat back down, toddler squirming on my lap, and turned to Google. Thousands of posts popped up. Apparently, this was a very<\/em> common toddler trick.<\/p>\r\n

Nasal aspirators<\/a> came up, but one word stood out: Water<\/em>. I asked for water.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cWe could force it out with air,\u201d my husband suggested.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cHow would we even know how much air is safe?\u201d I asked. My anxiety was rising again.<\/p>\r\n

Meanwhile, my son, completely unfazed by our escalating concern, had wriggled free from my grip and shoved his finger back up his nose.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cStop!\u201d I yelled and instinctively smacked his bottom.<\/p>\r\n

The look on his face melted me. He burst into tears, wailing loud and long\u2014more from shock than pain.<\/p>\r\n

And then, like a miracle\u2026 Pop!<\/em>
Out came the culprit\u2014a single shiny red bean.<\/p>\r\n

For a second, we all froze.<\/p>\r\n

Then came laughter. Loud, relieved, tearful laughter from every corner of the room.<\/p>\r\n

I picked him up and hugged him close. \u201cNext time you do that,\u201d I whispered in his ear with a smile, \u201cI\u2019ll know exactly<\/em> how to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\r\n
