You Don\u2019t Get to Define Me! A Rejoinder to John Zibiri<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Someone recently shared a frustrating article allegedly written by an expat named John Zibiri<\/em>. In it, he recounted his so-called \u201cNigerian experience.\u201d I couldn\u2019t finish reading it. It was distasteful, dismissive, and drenched in condescension.<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s my response:<\/p>\n

Thank God John Zibiri left Nigeria. I hope he never returns.<\/p>\n

The Nigeria I Know<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve worked with expatriates for nearly three decades. In all my years, I\u2019ve never met a John Zibiri. What I have<\/em> encountered are Americans, Australians, Europeans, and Asians who fall in love with Nigeria\u2014and often don\u2019t want to leave when their assignment ends.<\/p>\n

Why?
Because Nigeria offers them what few countries can. In Nigeria, they live like royalty\u2014affording cooks, drivers, cleaners, security personnel. Many of them rise socially and financially far above the station they held back home.<\/p>\n

One story we often laugh about came from my husband\u2019s friend. A senior oil executive got married during his posting in Lagos. Years later, he was promoted and transferred to Europe. When his wife arrived at their new home\u2014a small city apartment\u2014she was stunned. No housekeepers. No driver. No fanfare. She actually asked him, \u201cAre you sure this is a promotion? It feels like a demotion!\u201d<\/p>\n

He told that story himself at his farewell party\u2014back in Lagos.<\/p>\n

Tired of the Bad Press<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nigeria has its challenges\u2014of course. But the media exaggerates them. I\u2019ve traveled to many countries, and still, I\u2019d choose Nigeria as my home any day.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I\u2019m done listening to the likes of John Zibiri.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t get to come here, enjoy our hospitality, benefit from our systems, and then drag our name through the mud.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t get to define my people.<\/p>\n

As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie once told Robert Emmet Tyrell, \u201cYou don\u2019t get to define what racism is.\u201d
In the same way, John Zibiri, you<\/em> don\u2019t get to define what Nigeria is.<\/p>\n

If You Hate It So Much\u2026 Leave<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Years ago, while working at Diageo PLC, I told my old boss John H\u2014another expat\u2014something similar.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you hate it here so much, Mr. H, why do you stay?\u201d<\/p>\n

His answer surprised me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a good question, Ronkie. I know who I am and where I come from\u2014but I wouldn\u2019t be anywhere near who I am today if not for Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n

Exactly.<\/p>\n

You see, many of these expats owe their success to Nigeria. And deep down, they know it.<\/p>\n

To My Fellow Nigerians<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Don\u2019t let anyone belittle you or define you.<\/p>\n

Despite our flaws\u2014unstable electricity, bad roads, water scarcity, corruption\u2014foreigners still come. And not for altruistic reasons. They come because Nigeria has value<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Our people are strong, smart, generous, and full of potential. We\u2019re not perfect, but we\u2019re not anyone\u2019s punching bag either.<\/p>\n

So to Mr. Zibiri I say:
You don\u2019t like Nigeria. Fine. Nigeria probably isn\u2019t crazy about you either.
But do us all a favor\u2014keep your insults to yourself.
And please, don\u2019t rush back.<\/p>\n
