But that was before the accident. Four months into her second pregnancy, an okada collision shattered her world.\r\n\r\nThis week, she should have been naming her baby boy. Instead, she was naming her pain.\r\n\r\nTo make things worse, her husband had just received a possible transfer to Sokoto. Her sister Chioma, usually the first to show up at family events, had called the night before to say she wouldn\u2019t be visiting. And then, Ngozi, her well-meaning friend, had said the worst thing of all:\r\n

Long green stems poked from the top\u2014no petals, no blossoms.\r\n\r\nAdanna frowned. \u201cWhat kind of bouquet is that?\u201d\r\n\r\nTolu smiled knowingly. \u201cIt\u2019s my fourth year getting the Thanksgiving Thorns. I still feel their weight, right here,\u201d she said, pressing her chest.\r\n\r\n\u201cYou paid for that?\u201d Adanna asked in disbelief.\r\n\r\nTolu nodded. \u201cThree years ago, I had nothing. My father died suddenly. My business collapsed. My son got tangled in addiction. Adanna\u2019s heart stirred. Ngozi\u2019s words, once sharp and unwelcome, returned, now gentle and true.\r\n\r\n\u201cI guess the truth is\u2026 I don\u2019t want comfort,\u201d Adanna whispered. \u201cI\u2019m angry. I\u2019ve lost a child.\u201d\r\n\r\nAt that moment, a cheerful man burst through the curtain. \u201cMama Ife! My wife sent me for our usual: twelve long-stemmed thorns!\u201d\r\n\r\nAdanna stared, stunned, as Mama Ife handed him the same strange bundle.\r\n\r\n\u201cYou too?\u201d she asked softly.\r\n\r\nHe smiled. \u201cFour years ago, our marriage was done. Choosing Gratitude in Grief<\/h2>\r\nAdanna stood frozen. The ache in her chest shifted. Her clenched fists relaxed.\r\n\r\n\u201cI don\u2019t know if I can be thankful for the thorns in my life,\u201d she whispered.\r\n\r\nMama Ife reached for her hand. \u201cChild, roses without thorns are weak.
