The Global Origins of Skipping Rope<\/h4>\r\n

1. Ancient Egypt & Indigenous Australia<\/h5>\r\n

Evidence shows Egyptians used vines to jump<\/a> as early as 1600\u202fBC. Similarly, Aboriginal Australians have been observed leaping over vines or bamboo for recreation.<\/p>\r\n

2. Ancient China<\/h5>\r\n

Records indicate Chinese rope makers<\/a> used to leap over ropes during New Year’s celebrations. This practice, known as \u201cHundred Rope Jumping,\u201d dates back centuries\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

3. Europe Enters the Scene<\/h5>\r\n

By the 16th and 17th centuries, European children especially in the Netherlands, took up rope-skipping. Dutch settlers spread the practice to America in the 1600s, where it gained popularity among boys before girls joined in the 18th century .<\/p>\r\n

4. Girls Claim the Ritual<\/h5>\r\n

Into the 18th and 19th centuries, girls transformed skipping into a social pastime, adding songs, chants, and complex games. Jump-roping became a shared cultural tradition among young girls\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
