Most of us have goals. We dream of better lives. Of freedom. Of making a difference. But the road to success is rarely smooth. Especially when you start with nothing.<\/p>\r\n

Phiona Mutesi knows this road. She walked it\u2014barefoot.<\/p>\r\n

Born and raised in Katwe, one of Uganda\u2019s poorest slums, Phiona’s life started with hardship. There were no paved roads, no playgrounds, and no peace. Her father died when she was three. Her sister passed away from an illness that went untreated. Her family struggled to eat. Every day was a battle for survival.<\/p>\r\n

Yet, Phiona\u2019s story didn\u2019t end in Katwe.<\/p>\r\n

The Power of a Game<\/h2>\r\n

Phiona was nine years old when she discovered chess. Not in a school or a fancy club. But at a shack where a missionary named Robert Katende was teaching children how to play. To them, chess was more than a game. It was a lifeline.<\/p>\r\n

At first, Phiona went for the free food. But soon, the 64-square board became her world. She saw patterns. She learned strategy. She found focus. And for the first time, she believed she could win at something.<\/p>\r\n

In a game ruled by kings and queens, this girl from Katwe found power.<\/p>\r\n

Fighting for a Dream<\/h2>\r\n

Phiona trained hard. She faced laughter, doubt, and stigma. Some said chess was for boys. Others said it was for the rich. But she kept playing. And she kept winning.<\/p>\r\n

In 2009, she competed in Sudan. That was her first time leaving Uganda. Her first flight. Her first taste of international recognition. She didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\r\n

In 2010, she played at the World Chess Olympiad in Russia. Imagine that: a girl who once sold maize to survive was now sitting across from grandmasters on a global stage.<\/p>\r\n

But success didn\u2019t come easy. Phiona still faced hunger, poverty, and fear. She had to overcome language barriers, cultural shocks, and self-doubt. At times, she wanted to quit. But Katende kept encouraging her. And her mother, Harriet, stood by her side.<\/p>\r\n
